Sumatera Selatan - Palembang

Palembang is the second-largest city on Sumatra island after Medan and the capital city of the South Sumatra province inIndonesia. It is one of the oldest cities in the Malay Archipelago and Southeast Asia. Palembang is located on the Musi Riverbanks on the east coast of southern Sumatra, with a land area of 369.22. square kilometres and a population of 1,708,413 people (2014).[1] Palembang is the sixth-largest city in Indonesia after Jakarta, Surabaya, Bandung, Medan and Semarang. Its built-up (or metro) area with Talang Kelapa and Rambutan was home to 1,620,429 inhabitants at the 2010 census.


Palembang is one of the oldest cities in Indonesia, and has a history of being the capital city of the Kingdom of Srivijaya, a powerful Malay kingdom, which influenced much of Southeast Asia.[2] The earliest evidence of its existence dates from the 7th century; a Chinese monk, Yijing, wrote that he visited Srivijaya in the year 671 for 6 months. The first inscription in which the name Srivijaya appears also dates from the 7th century, namely the Kedukan Bukit Inscription around Palembang in Sumatra, dated 683.[3]


Palembang's main landmarks include Ampera Bridge and Musi River, the latter of which divides the city into two. The north bank of river in Palembang is known as Seberang Ilir and the south bank of the river in Palembang is known as Seberang Ulu. This city was known as a host city for 2011 Southeast Asian Games. Additionally, 2018 Asian Games is going to be held in the city along with Jakarta.


1. Jembatan Ampera



Ampera Bridge, main city landmark, is a bridge crossed over 1,177 metres above the Musi River which connects Seberang Ulu and Seberang Ilir area of Palembang.

2. Sungai Musi



Musi River, about 750 km along the river which divides the city into two parts, namely Palembang Seberang Ulu and Sebrang Ilir. It is one of the longest river in Sumatra. Since early of its history, the Musi River has become the economic lifeblood of Palembang city and South Sumatran region in general. Along the river banks, there are some landmarks, tourism sites and cultural attractions, such as the Ampera Bridge, Kuto Besak Fort, the Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II Museum, Kemaro Island, 16 Ilir Market, traditional raft houses, Pertamina's oil refineries, Pupuk Sriwijaya (PUSRI) fertilizer plants, Bagus Kuning beach, Musi II Bridge, Al Munawar Mosque, etc




3. Pulau Kemaro





Kemaro Island is one of most popular destinations in South Sumatera. This island is located in a smaal delta of Musi River, about 6km downstream of Ampera Bridge. Kemaro Island is lies in between the industrial areas of Sriwijaya Fertilizer Plant and Pertamina Oil Refinery in Plaju and Gerong River. It precisely located for about 40km from Palembang.


When visiting Kemaro Island, there will be a Chinese Vihara or Klenteng with 9 stairs, typically Chinese building in the middle of the island. This Hok Tjiang Rio temple was build since 2006 and becomes the signature icon in this island. Moreover, on the island there is a Buddha temple that oftenly visited by Buddhists follower to pray or to visit the graves.


This island becomes more crowded during Chinese festivals like Cap Go Meh or Imlek New Year. In front of Klenteng, there is grave yard of Prince Tan Bun An from Chinese and Princess Siti Fatimah of Sriwijaya. By their love story, this island is made up and popular to be Pulau Jodoh or Mate Island.

4. Masjid Cheng Ho




The Mosque Cheng Hoo Palembang actually called the Mosque Al Islam Muhammad Cheng Hoo Sriwijaya Palembang is Chinese Muslim nuanced mosque located in Jakabaring Palembang. This mosque was established by the initiative of the sespuh, counselor, Board of Islamic unity of Chinese Indonesia (PITI) Sumsel, and as well as the Chinese community leaders around the Palembang.Mosques established citizens of this lineage also has a new priest who has memorized 30 chapter of the scripture of Islam, Al-Quran namely Choirul Rizal.


In addition, mosque built by combining elements of China, Malays and the archipelago has been completed some part of the mosque as the house of the high priest, hedge about, and activate the Character Traits Described education for children for free. The development of the mosque was started with the placement of the first stone of 2003. The initial capital construction of the mosque is around Rp 150 million from the results of exaggeration to say with his colleagues at PITI. The land where the mosque stood a grant from the regional government and the newly inaugurated on 2006.
